Chopard’s luxury sports watch series reinforces its sporty style with chronographs.

The Alpara series is Chopard’s interpretation of luxury sports watches, and this genre has never disappeared since its inception in 1972. The series was launched in 2019 with a date and date and time-only model, which enhanced its sports qualifications with the advent of the new 44mm automatic flyback chronograph. Chopard’s column-wheel chronograph movement is the core of these three new models. The movement has 60-hour autonomy and is COSC certified. The new Alpine Eagle XL Chrono has both a Lucent steel case with a blue or black dial, and a two-tone ethical rose gold and stainless steel version with a black dial. Let’s take a look at it on the wrist.

From ST. Moritz to the eagle in the Alps
With the advent of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak in 1972, almost all watchmakers worthy of his praise are involved in this field. Chopard bought luxury sports watches before the Alpine Eagle appeared. Chopard was designed by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele in 1980, and Chopard’s first luxury sports watch was St. Moritz. St. Moritz is a successful watch that successfully captures the highlights of the 1980s and is equipped with a beautifully exquisite bezel and eight screws. It was eventually discontinued. Although there are many sports watches related to the classic racing world (for example, Mille Miglia), the brand portfolio lacks steel sports watches with integrated bracelets and robust designs.

Since 2013, Chopard has been adhering to the concept of sustainable luxury, and its timepieces and jewellery are made of ethical gold (Fairmined gold). When this idea was approved to reinterpret St. Moritz in a more modern way, the theme of the environment became fundamental. To prove that Chopard not only echoes the most important “environmental sustainability” label, the brand is a founding member of the Eagle Wing Foundation. The foundation recorded the impact of climate change on the Alps in a unique way. White-tailed eagles were equipped with cameras on their backs while flying high in the Alps, thus providing a unique perspective on the impact of global warming on glaciers.

Alpine Eagle series watches exhibit common features: eight screws on the round bezel; unique crown guard on the barrel-shaped central case; 100m waterproof integrated bracelet; textured sunburst dial inspired by the eagle’s iris ; Feather-like counterweight on the central seconds hand; date window between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock; compass rose engraved on the crown; and the use of super-hard and shiny Lucent steel.

XL chronograph case
This chronograph is the third chronograph to be added to the Alpine Eagle series. It is also the first ultra-large chronograph with a diameter of 44 mm and a height of 13.15 mm, which can accommodate a precision movement. Furthermore, Lucent A223 steel is the material of choice for this situation. This material is equivalent to surgical steel, 50% harder than ordinary steel, and has anti-allergic and high reflectivity. Both models are made of sturdy Lucent steel, while the third mixes Lucent steel with 18k ethical rose gold accessories on the strap, crown and central link.

Like many luxury sports watches, the case structure adopts a round bezel with eight aligned screws mounted on the top of the tonneau-shaped case and combined with brushed and polished surfaces. The crown guard of the Alpine Eagle has a similar structure on the other side of the case, now on both sides are brushed rectangular buttons and the crown. The surface of the one-piece bracelet uses a polished spindle-shaped central link and two outer links. The surface is treated with wire drawing. The beveled polished edges are fixed on the wrist with a three-fold folding clasp.

Eagle Eye Diary
The striking texture of the dial echoes the iris of the eagle eye, with a clear sunburst pattern, which is another common feature of many Alpine eagle watches. The past Aletsch Blue interprets the novelty of chronographs, and is the new Pitch Black dial color. The dial is rich in texture, and the surface is available in two colors, with two raised and horizontal chronographs with snail nails (30 minutes at 3 o’clock, 12 hours at 9 o’clock), rhodium-plated rims, 6 There is a second hand at o’clock. A clock with a snail inside and round edges, a date window tucked between the 4 and 5 o’clock marks, and a tachymeter on the circumference. The three chronograph hands are red, and the central chronograph second hand has the iconic feather weight.

The white tachymeter scale used to measure the average speed ranges from 60 to 400 with red dots at 100, 160 and 240. The Roman numeral 12 and hour markers are rhodium-plated, processed by X1 Super-LumiNova and applied to the dial. . The hour and minute hands of the baton are also rhodium-plated and shiny.

Automatic timing
Chopard’s 03.05-C self-winding flyback chronograph movement has passed the COSC chronograph certification and is visible under the deck and through the sapphire crystal back cover. With its four patents, this column wheel movement is equipped with a one-way gear system to prevent energy loss.

The vertical clutch ensures accurate time measurement start, while the flyback function ensures smooth continuous timing. The movement is also equipped with Variner hairspring, which ensures the stability of the movement speed by compensating for its inertial changes. The movement has a frequency of 28,800vph and a hollow tungsten rotor that can store up to 60 hours of autonomy.
